Hello Jalops, my car will be in the shop for some body work in the next couple hours. My insurance is providing me with a rental but I have never had to pick before and I need help! What car should I pick? I'm in NYC!

What are they letting you get?

The car being worked on is a station wagon, so a comparable vehicle. It's a Mercedes 300td W123

Options would help. Usually they provide a "similar" vehicle, (I.E. If the car being repaired is a truck, they will allow you to pick from the truck / suv selection).

When my Outback was in the body shop a few months ago after being hit, the rental company gave me a "comparable" vehicle also. It was a Corolla. I'm still salty about it.

I'm looking at the wagon selections, and I don't want to be looking at the wagon selections any more.
edit - Yeah, you're looking at a bunch of Big 3 SUV/Crossovers from what I've seen. No idea at this point.

tell them to give you a bank vault on wheels with a couple of windows in it, that is about right. Are you getting the rear wheel arches fixed (that is usually what I see)

What's your daily allowance? Most run the gamut from $16/day (thanks a lot State Farm) to $50/day. As the insurance companies have a pretty low rate negotiated with the rental companies, the average is $30/day. For most companies that will get you up to an Impala/Camry. Sadly, they use terms such as "Comparable", but per most states insurance laws, "Comparable" means "running". In At-Fault states, the bare minimum for the injured (not-responsible) party is literally a bus pass. Luckily most insurers don't want a bad name, so they pay for a standard rental car.
Just remember, no matter what you get, a rental car is always the fastest car you'll ever drive.

So presumably you can pick from mid sized sedans / full sized sedans. Chrysler 300 is usually a good pick if you can, or I would say something from Nissan.

You'll probably get a large crossover (think Chevy Traverse or whatever the Hyundai equivalent is) if they consider your wagon's capacity, otherwise you'll probably be put in a mid-sized sedan.
I rent all the time (more than 100 days last year) and have grown to despise the large crossovers. Minivans on the other hand I've developed an inexplicable love for. If they try to give you a crossover see if you can get in a Town & Country or something.
For midsize sedans your first order should be to get whatever is somewhat decent with the lowest miles on it. Lately I've been having the best luck with Kia Optimas...they're surprisingly decent.

Rentals In NYC rarely go lower than 100 a day.

You actually bring up a good point. If I ever had the chance, I'd hoon a Camry just to show that it could be done.

If you need a wagon for work/lifestyle, press them to get something with proper utility. I would personally recommend the most hoonable vehicle on every rental lot:
Spacious, V8, RWD, and if you leave the hazard lights on, you can park just about anywhere without receiving a ticket.

I had heard that between rates and taxes it's ludicrously expensive in the city.
Did someone else hit your vehicle? Because that's when you have the most room to press the rental car company for something better. Also, don't let them talk you into "upgrading" for an out of pocket fee. Demand the better car for what the insurance company pays. If they give you crap, take what they have and immediately call your adjuster. Watch how quickly they change their tune. As a former rental car district manager, I can tell you the squeaky wheel absolutely gets the grease.

Oh, it can be done. But an Econoline is even more hoonable.

Parking them is the worst. Yellow security posts spring up behind them like rakes in a cartoon.
